Join Dr. Orit Wolf and Annemie over brunch as we discuss the New Normal and coaching and mentoring.
We all want 2020 Vision – but what we need now is 2040 Vision
…Or stated in another way …
If Coaching and Mentorship in the past edged us toward 2020 vision, this will not be of help in the future!
Put simply, coaching is a process that aims to improve performance and focuses on the ‘here and now’ rather than on the distant past or future. Coaching aims to unlock a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them. Coaching, on the other hand, is for a short period of time.
Mentoring is a long-term process based on mutual trust and respect. Mentoring is more focused on creating an informal association between the mentor and mentee, whereas coaching follows a more structured and formal approach. Essentially it is the activity of supporting and advising someone with less experience to help them develop – mainly at work.
The new normal will be filled with wicked problems – both personally and professionally. These differ vastly from Simple problems (problem and solution knows) and Complex problems (problem know and solution can be figured out). Wicked problems are problems where, more often than not, the problem is initially unclear and requires time to discover, the solution is hard to fathom and implement and often once the solution is derived, the original problem changes.
“Normal vision” is 20/20 and with it, a person sees the same line of letters at 20 feet that a person with normal vision sees at 20 feet. 20/40 vision means that a person can see at 20 feet what a person with normal vision sees at 40 feet.
Our hypothesis is therefore that neither Coaching nor Mentoring (aimed at giving you 2020 vision) are helpful in a world of Wicked Problems. In this world 2040 vision will allow us to see beyond, to constantly evolve and meet ever changing challenges.
