A Conversation with Tzameret Fuerst
Hacking your blindspots
Roundtable discussion: September 24, 2020
We were very excited to be joined by Tzameret Fuerst for another roundtable discussion. Tzameret is a keynote speaker & corporate resilience trainer, after years as a social entrepreneur, with a present-day David & Goliath story, fighting to bring a lifesaving medical device to scale in the face of extreme adversity.
Tzameret knew she wanted to make a difference on a global level. To quote her, “It takes the same amount of time to think big as it does to think small, so if you have the capacity to think big, you are wasting time doing anything else”. With that in mind, she became the Co-Founder and former CEO of Circ MedTech, developers of PrePex, an FDA cleared and globally acclaimed medical device for HIV prevention.
With a medical intervention and business proposition that, according to the World Health Organization, could save 3.5 million lives and 16.5 billion dollars, you would think it would be received with open arms. However, Tzameret found out that it was not as “easy” as she thought. In our discussion, Tzameret explained why and how this assumption was her blind spot. She ultimately went from concept to global commercial reality, with funding by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and US Government, but the journey was anything but easy.
With millions dying in a crisis such as HIV, you would think it “WIIFT” (What’s in it for them) would be totally is obvious. But if you assume, as she explained, you are inherently blind to their motivation and agenda. When she visited Africa, she discovered that no one was motivated by saving lives or costs. Understanding this was the turning point in her approach to scaling the life-saving device.
Through her methodology, Hacking Your Blind Spots, Tzameret works with companies to uncover the unknown in their stakeholder ecosystem. By looking back at setbacks, through a very specific lens that she developed, you can codify what went wrong, recover and move on.
Tzameret wrapped up with, “Everything you do along the way has a purpose, and you have to believe that the decisions you make are the right ones in real-time. If they turn out to be wrong, the experience can be used to learn and adapt. It can be called failure only if you didn’t learn from your mistakes and hack your blind spots”.
Thank you again for joining us Tzameret!
